According to NPR, "roughly half of Gaspar Noe's Love consists of raw, unsimulated sex acts – presented in 3D, no less". The film is notable for its unsimulated sex scenes. He asserted that it would "give guys a hard-on and make girls cry". In a pre-release interview with Marfa Journal, Noé implied that the film would have an explicitly sexual feel. Noé has said that the film's screenplay was seven pages long. Principal photography took place in Paris. The budget of the film was approximately €2.6 million. He found Karl Glusman for the role of Murphy through a mutual friend. Love is the screen debut of the film's two main actresses, Muyock and Kristin.
Electra's whereabouts and ultimate fate are left unresolved. Those flashbacks depict their first meeting in Paris their quick hookup and their lives over the next two years, which are filled with drug abuse, rough sex and tender moments.

For the rest of this day, Murphy recalls his relationship with Electra in a series of fragmented, nonlinear flashbacks. Nora has not heard from her for three months given Electra's suicidal tendencies, Nora is quite worried about her. Nora asks Murphy if he has heard from Electra. On a rainy 1 January morning, Electra's mother, Nora, phones Murphy at the small Paris apartment where he lives with Omi and their 18-month-old son, Gaspar. This unplanned pregnancy ended the relationship between Murphy and Electra, and it forced Murphy to live with Omi. But later, Murphy had sex with Omi behind Electra's back, as a result of which Omi became pregnant (the condom broke and she is against abortion). One day, Murphy and Electra met and had a no-strings-attached threesome with another woman, a young Danish teenager named Omi, as a way to add some excitement to their love life.
He had a French girlfriend, called Electra, whom he dated for two years. It has earned a place in the history of cinema, and is hopefully a step away from the feelings of shame people feel about sex, a step towards greater freedom in art, culture and cinema.Murphy is an American cinema school student, living in Paris. I found talking about it can result in the conversation going to some very interesting places. A lot of reviews and comments on IMDb seem to say it is not a thought provoking movie, or that it is pretentious, yet the poster was moved to write about their thoughts on it, so it certainly isn't empty. If you can be immersed into a movie's atmosphere and want something to feed your imagination, then you will get a lot from it.

If you judge a movie by how much the pacing and suspense immerses you, you won't enjoy Love. I didn't feel like I was experiencing the story directly (as I do with good suspense movies), but I did want things to work out well for the characters. To feel any more real it would need to be in the style of a documentary, which would have the effect of distancing you from the characters. It's not porn, more like an aestheticized version of somebody's personal sex tape, but one designed to provoke contemplation more than any other response. You can feel the love that has gone into this film. Kind of like a hybrid of Enter the Void, Nymphomaniac, The Lobster and Weekend. As thought provoking and stylish as you'd expect.
